Sales during autumn 2016

 Tregaron Sale

The Tregaron sale took place on 27th September and included 80 pedigree registered Welsh Black stores, mainly steers, and a handful of heifers.

A pair of steers, 18/20 months old from Mr RG Davies, Pledrog, Llandysul, Ceredigion, sold for the top price of £1,205 each to Mr John Jenkins.  The same vendor sold a pen of four 18 month old steers for £1,100, and another pair of 13 month old steers for £1,005.

Other steers were sold for prices ranging from £1100 to £550 and the females on offer sold from £775 to £500.

It pays to register cattle if selling as stores in the markets and putting the sire on the passport is also a good idea.

Dolgellau Autumn Sale

18 pedigree Welsh Black females were on offer at the sale in Dolgellau with Farmers Marts on 25th October 2016.  The judge at the pre-sale show was Mr Hefin Jones, Llwynsarn, Dolgellau assisted by his daughter Sioned.

The top price was 1950gns for a cow and calf from D William Jenkins, Neuadd-yr-Ynys, Taliesin, Machynlleth.  Neuadd Gwenno 137th was sold with her 1 month old calf to Mr HB Evans, Cwm y Glo, Caernarfon.

The Champion Female was Ysguboriau Vera 80th, sold by Mr William Jones, Ysguboriau, Tywyn that sold for 1600gns to Mr LLew Jones, Bridin, Anglesey.

Reserve Champion Female Ysguboriau Dwynwen 145th, also from Mr Jones, Ysguboriau, also sold for 1800gns to Mr LLew Jones.

The Champion Maiden Heifer was Mynach Rhian 26th from A &RC Williams, Pentre, Bala.  Born July 2015 and sired by Bodig Cai 50th, she sold for 1400gns to DR Bowen, Molleston, Narberth.  The Reserve Champion Maiden Heifer Hafodesgob Agnes 70th was unsold.

Society Sale at Monmouthshire Livestock Centre

There was a long day for the 16th Annual Sale at raglan with auctioneers J. Straker Chadwick & Sons, Abergavenny.  The ringside was packed and a great atmosphere.  177 head out of 180 sold and trade was good. 

The Show was judged by Mr Philip Heard, Okehampton, Devon, assisted by Mr Derek Northey, Cornwall.

Top price was paid for Syfni Gwenno 11th, born 2011, and her heifer calf born April 2016.  She had been running back to the bull Syfni Brynach and she sold to BJ Merrick, Glangrwyney for 1,900gns

Second top price also went to a cow and calf from the same stable, Syfni Betrys 3rd  that had a first prize in the pens.  She sold to D and D Morgan, Alltgoch, Talybont for 1,820gns

The Champion Female was Llandre Princess 16th from MV & GM James, Whitland, Carms.  She was an in calf heifer born March 2013, and sold to Williams and Wigley, Merthyr Tydfil for 1,000gns. 

The Champion Maiden Heifer was Frampton Muriel, born February 2015, from MF & EE Long, Frampton, Llantwit Major, Glamorgan.  She was sired by Gerddi Bluog Addewid 4th and out of Llanarth Muriel 2nd.  She sold to T R Williams, Tonmawr, Port Talbot for 1,350gns.

The Reserve Champion Maiden Heifer, Llandre princess 17th, also from MV & GM James, Llandre and she sold for 1,000gns to L & G Roberts, Penrefail Crossroads. 

The Champion Bull of the day was Trefychan at Daf Dylan 6th, from Ben Reynolds and Mrs A Cook. He was a July 2014 born bull but was unsold on the day. 

After the show the two judges walked the pens and picked out a first prize cow and calf, a heifer and a pen of stores. 

These prizes went to:

Cow and calf: Gareth James, for Syfni Betrys 3rd.  

Heifer: A R Evans, Sker cottages, Kenfig, Bridgend 

Stores, Mr and Mrs C Thorpe, Lucton, Leominster 

Top store price was £1060 for the first prize winners from the Thorpe's Lucton Herd from Leominster. 

Mrs Marian Phillips sold a cow and calf for 1,680gns to SJ Tutchings, Worcester. 

AR Evans, had a good run of organic Maiden heifers and they topped out at 1,320gns.  He had others sold for 1,000gns, 960gns, 950gns, 900gns. 

A Morgan Farms, Rhigos, Glamorgan had nice heifers selling for 1,200gns, 1,180gns and 1,100gns.

EDM Davies, Cathedine sold heifers for up to 1,000gns. 

Included in the sale were cattle from the Turnant Herd, Longtown.  This was a dispersal of the herd and all found new homes. 

Their top price was 1500gns for a 2014 born cow and calf. This was a Trefychan bred cow with a heifer calf born April 2016 at foot. She sold to D Wigley, Merthr Tydfil.

Several other outfits were reaching 1300/1400gns. 

Mrs Jane Davies bought some of her breeding back from the Turnant Herd one of which was Castell Fanny 205th and her young heifer calf, bought for 1,360gns.

Thee heifers sold for up to 1,120gns. 

The stock bull Brysgaga Berwyn 11th sold to Loraine Howells for 1,050gns
